Scam alert: MetaMask warns users of deceptive March 31 airdrop rumors

Web3 wallet provider MetaMask has issued a warning to its users about “false rumors” of a supposed MetaMask airdrop that has been circulating on social media.

On March 28th, MetaMask took to Twitter to clarify the situation, stating that there have been “quite a few rumors going around” of a MetaMask snapshot or airdrop on March 31.

“These rumors are not only false, but they are dangerous. They create opportunities for scammers and phishers,” warned MetaMask.

Cointelegraph has identified a number of Twitter accounts purporting to be related to MetaMask or a MetaMask token airdrop.

Alongside its denial of the rumors, MetaMask has urged users to remain on high alert for fake sites in the days ahead.

The rumors may be connected to a “fireside chat” session with ConsenSys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin at ETHDenver 2023 on March 14th. Lubin recently reiterated that his firm is “actively working to decentralize” MetaMask, and he reportedly confirmed that the team intends to launch a token.

Lubin first hinted at a MetaMask token back in November 2021 with a tweet that read “Wen $MASK? Stay tuned.”

Although MetaMask has indicated that an imminent airdrop is not on the horizon, the community’s response implies that they are still optimistic that an airdrop could occur, albeit at a later date.

Cointelegraph has reached out to ConsenSys for clarification on whether a future airdrop is in the pipeline but has not yet received a response at the time of writing.

The rumors led to a threefold increase in activity on MetaMask, with DappRadar data showing that the number of transactions on March 27th reached 21,460, compared to a baseline of roughly 8,000.

MetaMask experienced a similar surge in activity last November following rumors of an impending airdrop, after recent airdrops from both the Ethereum Name Service and Lubin’s mention of a token.
